Writing a Novel – 3 More Tips

So want to write a book? Here are some quick tips to get you started.

Write your story so that it follows on and keeps the reader compelled to read on. Think about what you do in a bookshop. You pick up the book and look at the back cover. If you like that you read the first page. If that doesn't do it for you then you put it down and look for another one. That’s what we all do isn’t it? The back cover makes you want to look inside. The first page makes you want to read page two and so on. Your reader must be compelled to read the story.

Have a very clear view in your mind about the characters. You must know things about them even if that does not come out in the story. As a starting point, what is their favourite food? Colour? Favourite relative, and why? What do they dislike doing more than anything else? Their favourite treat? Holiday destination? What kind of house would they live in? You can make the list almost endless and it is very unlikely that all this information would come out in the story, but this gives you an idea of the in depth knowledge that you need. If you don't understand your characters inside out, how can you convey your story?

Live the story. When your main character is talking to someone, running down the road, eating a meal, you need to be with him, to see it and to be there.

These quick tips are designed to help you get going. Remember perfection kills the mind. You don't have to get it right you just have to get it going. What are you waiting for?
