How to Write a Novel – 3 Quick Tips
Writers Block
Writers block is a condition that is all too familiar to many writers. Minutes stretch into hours and the pages remain blank. If the condition carries on too long in the life of a writer, a rather frightening phenomenon sometimes leads to critical introspection and even a questioning of your choice of profession or hobby.
Creative writing can be broken down into three very basic parts and everything else is just built on it.The first of these is to have the story in your head, or at least the basis of the story, which can be developed. The second is to have the means and place to write it. Most writers have a specific work area where writing takes place, along with the actual physical needs such as a pen, paper or computer. The third part of writing that you need to understand is that now and again the writing stops and no matter what you do it will not start again. It is the third point that concerns us here.
These comments are based at the new or inexperienced writer. More experienced writers normally work out their own way of dealing with it and for meeting deadlines. I wish that I could tell you that there has been a magic pill developed that will get rid of this debilitating issue in the blink of an eye. Sadly that is not the case. Furthermore there is no known way of writing well when your head, for whatever reason, is empty. So this is all you can do. Make sure that you are happy with your writing arrangements. You should be comfortable in your designated room or area. The desk or whatever you use should be laid out to put you at ease, the chair comfortable and the lighting just right. Make sure that the story, or at least part of it, is in your head. Your research has been done, if needed, and you are ready to go. The only other thing that you can do is to try and identify when your most productive time is and then work accordingly. If these are in place then you can do no more. At some point you will find that suddenly your head empties, your pen has stopped moving or your keyboard has stopped the tapping noises. At this point do not try and write. At best you will produce poor work. At worst you will sit staring for hours doing nothing. Now this is what you do and it may seem odd. You walk away and do something else. If you walk away and do nothing else then your mind will start wondering why you could not write. So read a book, go for a walk with your partner, put the radio on or do that DIY job that you have been threatening to do for ages. When your mind is ready to return you will know because ideas and creative thoughts will start coming back into your head and that is the time to start writing again. Sorry there's no magic pill, but it works. Don't worry if your writing stops. Take time out. When the inspiration wants to return you'll be glad you didn't stay sitting at your desk for hours doing nothing.
