Write a Novel – 3 More Tips

So want to write a book? Here are some quick tips to get you started.

Enjoy it! You might make a squillion, you might simply read it to your children and see their faces light up as the story unfolds. It might remain undiscovered until long after your passing when the world discovers it and it is recognized as a masterpiece (now wouldn't that really annoy you!). If you enjoyed writing it you have accomplished something, and that is further than a lot of people get.

Get the grammar right! Spellcheckers, by which we all live, will only take you so far. As an example they will not distinguish between "of" and "off" as they will both be recognised. Find out where to use an apostrophe, a comma and so on.

Think you've finished? Delighted with your work? Now the odd thing. Put it down for two or three weeks, then re-edit. Difficult one is this. If you have finished it and are happy why do you need to re-edit? The answer is because you will almost certainly read things that don't make sense. A lady comes into the life of your main character in chapter two. Inexplicably she gets a mention in chapter one. You will see sentences, paragraphs, or even whole chapters that can be taken out. Don’t be afraid to show your work to a trusted friend or relative. The key word here is trusted. If you show your work to your Mother she is likely to say "It's wonderful", that's what mothers do and it will get you nowhere. You want someone to come back to you and say, "There's part of chapter two that doesn't make sense" or "I didn’t understand what such and such a person was supposed to be trying to do." With comments like that you can be sure that something needs revisiting.

These quick tips are designed to help you get going. Remember perfection kills the mind. You don't have to get it right you just have to get it going. What are you waiting for?
