How to Write a Novel – 3 Quick Tips

So want to write a novel? Here are some quick tips to get you started.

Stuck for an idea? This is probably the most difficult one to deal with because people will commonly have a story, or part at least part of a story, in their head before they start. If it's your first book then you are probably better writing about something that you have knowledge of. This could either be based around a hobby you have or perhaps a period of history that you are interested in. At this point you probably have some idea of the type of story that you would like to write e.g. a historical romantic story, a lighthearted comedy. Try and let things develop naturally if you can. The mind often works best when a seed is planted and left for a while.

Write in a style and at a time that you are comfortable with. Most people find that having a loose framework that they have jotted down as a good starting point. If you want to write it on your laptop in the early hours of the morning, then do it then. Why not? You want to start your book at the end? Go for it. People who advise this or that are simply saying what works for them. If you want to set aside specific times and locations where to write, then do so. The only rule is if something works for you then just run with it. Empty out the story onto paper or your computer screen. This is your aim; you have a story to tell, so tell it. Do it and do it now. Do not worry that you don't know what happens in a particular part of the story. You don't have to get it right, you just have to get it going.

If you get writers block then stop. Don’t try and force yourself to write. It will show in your work. Go have a bath, walk the dog, leave it for a few days. When the time is right and your inspiration and focus returns then you will carry on writing.

These quick tips are designed to help you get going. Remember perfection kills the mind. You don't have to get it right you just have to get it going. What are you waiting for?
